Where is Caswell County?

Caswell County is located about 45 minutes northeast of Greensboro, NC, an hour north of Chapel Hill. Caswell County borders the State of Virginia and the City of Danville.

How large is Caswell County?

Caswell County is almost square in shape and is approximately 426 squares miles in size. The county is very rural with a 2003 population of 24,310 and a population density of approximately 57 people per square mile.

What are the main attractions to Caswell County?

There are many. Caswell County probably has the largest number of Antebellum homes in the State of North Carolina. Prior to the Civil War, Caswell County was one of the wealthiest counties in the state. The Brightleaf tobacco curing process originated in Caswell County and tobacco production is still an important industry in the county. The rural nature of Caswell County makes it an excellent day trip for residents of Raleigh, Greensboro and the Durham-Chapel Hill areas wishing to get out the city and visit rural communities. What are the important dates in Caswell County History?

1750 - Initial settlements in Caswell County. The area was referred to as the North Orange region
1755 - Rev. Hugh McAden, first Presbyterian Minister to the Carolinas arrives in Caswell County
1776 - Area began furnishing supplies and over 100 militiamen for the American Revolution
1777 - Caswell County was formed from Orange County. County seat located in Leasburg
1793 - Caswell County was divided in half with the eastern portion forming Person County
1793 - County Seat moved to the site of present day Yanceyville in the center of the county
1796 - Town of Milton is incorporated
1839 - Discovery of “Brightleaf” tobacco process by black slave Abisha Slade
