General Statement of Duties
Performs routine manual work in the cleaning and maintenance of county buildings and grounds.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class is responsible for the performance of various custodial and minor maintenance duties necessary to keep buildings in a clean land sanitary condition and the upkeep of grounds. Standard cleaning methods and procedures are used in this position. Work is performed under general supervision and the incumbent is expected to exercise initiative in the performance of tasks. Work is reviewed by observation and inspection to determine that work assignments have been properly carried out and that standards of cleanliness and appearance are maintained.
Vacuum carpets, dust and polishes furniture;
Sweeps, mops and removes oil from floors; washes windows, doors and walls;
Makes minor repairs to fixtures; replaces light bulbs and fluorescent bulbs;
Removes debris and litter from buildings and grounds; sweeps sidewalks and picks up and disposes of trash around buildings and in the parking areas; mows grass as necessary;
Maintains stock of janitorial supplies and notifies superior when requisitions are necessary;
Opens buildings for daily use and secures buildings at end of day;
Cleans out drains and sewage lines;
Moves office furniture;
Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of modern cleaning methods, materials and equipment;
Ability to use cleaning materials properly, and to keep premises in a clean and sanitary condition;
Ability to understand and follow oral and simple written instructions;
Ability to read and write;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and other county employees
Work in this class is generally described as very heavy work. An employee must be able to physically perform the essential functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing and pulling, lifting, feeling and performing repetitive motions. Employees must also possess the visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned. Employees are subject to a variety of environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold for prolonged periods. Conduct of regular responsibilities could involve occupational exposure to blood.
The worker is subject to a variety of physical hazards such as working in high places and exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, and mechanical moving parts.
Minimum Experience and Training:
Graduation from an accredited high school; some experience in janitorial or related custodial work; or any equivalent combination of experience and training
Must be 18 years of age
