Full-Time Landfill Truck Driver / Maintenance Technician

General Statement of Duties

Caswell County is seeking a dedicated and reliable Landfill Truck Driver / Maintenance Technician to perform a variety of maintenance and operational duties at County-owned Solid Waste sites. This position involves much more than driving—you will also support the maintenance of trash compactors, assist in operating the scale house, and help ensure each site remains clean, functional, and safe for public use. This is not a driving-only position.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

This role requires independent judgment and initiative in maintaining the cleanliness and operation of multiple solid waste locations. The successful candidate will drive and operate trucks and heavy equipment, but a substantial part of the job also includes manual labor, equipment maintenance, site upkeep, and customer service. Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed through observation and inspection.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Operates large and small equipment, including trucks and trash compactors.

• Maintains, cleans, and organizes solid waste sites and facilities.

• Performs regular maintenance on trash compactors, recycling containers, and other site equipment (e.g., replacing wheels, lids, or bars).

• Operates refuse trucks and transports waste to designated landfill sites.

• Assists with scale house operations, including customer weighing and recordkeeping.

• Greets and assists customers in a professional, courteous manner.

• Completes routine paperwork, including vehicle and equipment maintenance logs.

• Follows and enforces all relevant safety practices and regulations.

• Opens and closes main solid waste centers daily as required.

• Responds to requests from other departments or agencies for additional support.

• Performs physical labor in various weather conditions, including lifting, hauling, and maintenance tasks.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of solid waste collection procedures and related safety standards.

• Ability to perform and document routine maintenance on trash compactors and vehicles.

• Proficient in operating heavy and light equipment.

• Familiarity with Caswell County’s street and site locations preferred.

• Strong customer service skills and ability to work effectively with the public.

• Ability to read, write, and follow both oral and written instructions.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Must be physically able to lift up to 100 lbs and work in extreme outdoor conditions.

Physical Requirements

This is a physically demanding position. The role requires lifting, walking, bending, kneeling, operating heavy equipment, and other physical activities for extended periods. Must be capable of working safely in varying outdoor environments and near heavy machinery.

Work Environment

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings, in all weather conditions. Exposure to loud noises, moving equipment, and environmental hazards (dust, odors, debris) is expected. PPE (personal protective equipment) must be worn as required.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.

• At least one (1) year of experience in maintenance, solid waste, or a related field.

• A valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred.

  
  

  If a candidate who meets all other job qualifications does not currently hold a Class B CDL, Caswell County may consider hiring the individual with the understanding that the license must be obtained within six (6) months of the date of hire.

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
